Common Mistakes in Label and Packaging Compatibility

17 August 2026 /KKDIK

Chemical product labels must comply with the CLP (CLP) Regulation. The most common errors in audits are preventable.

Common errors: missing or incorrect pictogram; incorrect signal word; missing H/P statements; Lack of UFI code even though it is required; Non-English or illegible label; Inconsistency between classification and SDS.

Incorrect labeling creates market risk and sanctions. ONAY Mühendislik Checks SEA/CLP compliant labels and packaging.

Labels Prepared with Free Translation

The most common error, hazard and precautionary statements are freely translated from the English original. The official Turkish equivalents of these expressions are defined in the SEA Regulation and they must be used verbatim. Even if the meaning is correct, a statement written in different words is considered non-conformity and is one of the most quickly detected errors in the audit.

Missing or Incorrect Pictogram

The number and selection of pictograms are directly derived from the classification. It is common for the red frame to be printed too thin, for the pictogram to be below the minimum size for the package size, or for unnecessary pictograms to be added despite priority rules. In addition, in some hazard classes the priority rule, where certain pictograms replace others, is overlooked.

Incorrect Display of Supplier Information

The supplier information on the label must indicate the company that places the product on the market in Turkey. Leaving the address information of the foreign manufacturer on imported products results in the responsible party not being identified. There should also be a phone number next to the address and this number should be reachable in case of emergency.

Misuse of Packaging Size and Exclusions

The facilities granted for small packagings are limited and do not cover every hazard class. Companies often omit mandatory information on the grounds of small packaging, but do not meet the conditions for the exception. Additionally, the requirement for a child-safe lid and tactile warning for the visually impaired is mandatory in certain classifications, regardless of packaging size.

Label and Safety Data Sheet Conflict

The difference between the classification on the label and the information in the 2nd section of the safety data sheet is one of the most serious findings in the audit. This discrepancy usually occurs when the form is updated but the label printing is not renewed. Planning the consumption of label stock simultaneously with the decision to change formulation or classification eliminates this risk.

Transition Plan for Label and Packaging Change

When the formulation or classification changes, the Label and Packaging side is often left behind. When making a decision, how the existing label printing stock, filling plan and products on the market will be managed should be determined at the same time. If a Label and Packaging transition plan is not made, the updated safety data sheet and the old label circulate for a while.

The discrepancy between the label and the material safety data sheet (MSDS / SDS) is one of the most common non-conformities in auditing: both must be derived from the same CSA classification.

Most of the code errors on the tag come from the declaration phase; See the UFI registration guide for details.
