Guide to Hazard Classes and H Phrases

17 August 2026 /KKDIK

Hazards under CLP (CLP); They are divided into physical, health and environmental classes, and each is defined by standard H (Hazard) expressions.

Physical hazards (flammability, explosiveness, etc.), health hazards (acute toxicity, skin corrosion, carcinogenicity, etc.) and environmental hazards (aquatic toxicity) are indicated on the label with the relevant H codes; P (Precautionary) statements are added for precaution.

Correct H/P assignment is essential for compliant label and SDS. ONAY Mühendislik performs classification and expression assignment.

What do H expressions mean?

Hazard statements describe in standard language what type of harm the substance causes. The code letter indicates the category: physical hazards, health hazards and environmental hazards. Each H phrase on the label corresponds directly to a hazard class established in the classification.

Class, category and expression relationship

First, the hazard class is determined, then the category (degree of severity), and finally the H expression corresponding to that category is written. If the category changes, the expression also changes. Therefore, a small proportion change in the formulation can affect the entire label.

Common error

The most common error is H statements copied from the old tag. Whenever the classification of one of the ingredients is updated, the label and safety data sheet must be renewed together; Updating just one will appear as a conflict in the audit.

P expressions and tag field

Precautionary statements describe the behavior required for the safe use of the product. When label space is limited, the most critical ones are selected; The choice is not arbitrary, it is prioritized according to hazard class. The justification for this selection should also be kept in the file.

What changes in small packaging

Convenience is allowed for some elements in very small packages, but this convenience must be justified. Hazard pictograms and the signal word are retained in most cases; The place to abbreviate is usually precautionary statements.

What to look for in an audit

The auditor first checks the compliance of the pictogram and signal word with the classification, and then the completeness of the H and P statements. The third check is the consistency of the information on the label with the safety data sheet.

Link Between Hazard Classes and Labeling

Once the hazard classes have been determined, all elements of the label are derived from this decision; pictograms, signal words, H-phrases and P-phrases are not selected individually. Therefore, when hazard classes are updated as a result of a component change, the label printing and the safety data sheet must be revised at the same time; otherwise the two documents would contradict each other.

H statements appear both on the product label and in section 2 (Hazard identification) of the MSDS document; The two sources must be exactly the same.
