Chemical legislation compliance and occupational health and safety complement each other; Both aim to protect workers from chemical exposure.
Contact points: Making Safety Data Sheets available in the workplace; implementation of risk management measures in exposure scenarios; correct labeling and classification; Compliance with chemical risk assessment.
ONAY Mühendislik provides support in the integration of chemical regulations data into occupational safety processes.
Two regulations look at the same data
The exposure scenarios prepared within the scope of KKDIK and the risk assessment on the occupational health and safety side are largely based on the same information: which substance is used in which process, for how long and with what precautions. Carrying out two studies separately creates unnecessary labor.
Safety data sheet is a common source
Exposure assessment on the OHS side and scenario verification on the chemical regulations side are both fed from the safety data sheet. If the form is not up to date, it will produce incorrect results on both sides.
Common checklist
When the chemical inventory, safety data sheet revision dates, personal protective equipment used and ventilation measures are collected in a single table, the same source serves both inspection and risk assessment.
Education side
If the worker in the field can read the label and know what the H statements mean, regulatory compliance moves from paper to field. Short trainings given through product examples are the fastest method to ensure this transition.
The Link Between Risk Assessment and SDS
The input for the chemical risk assessment required by occupational health and safety legislation is the safety data sheet prepared within the scope of KKDIK. The exposure controls and occupational exposure limit values in section 8 of the form are the basis for the measurement plan and selection of personal protective equipment in the workplace. A risk assessment made with an outdated SDS is considered incomplete in terms of both legislation in the audit.
Projecting Exposure Scenarios to the Field
The exposure scenarios attached to the extended safety data sheet are not abstract documents; It contains concrete conditions such as ventilation flow rate, operating time and amount used. The task of the business is to compare these conditions with its own field and, if there is a deviation, either draw the conditions into the scenario or inform the supplier of its own use. The written record of this comparison is the only evidence that the downstream user obligation has been fulfilled.
Training and Labeling Obligation
Training of employees on working with chemicals is permanent when they are given based on the hazard statements and pictograms on the label. Failure to carry label information on products whose packaging is changed or transferred to intermediate containers in the warehouse constitutes a violation of both SEA Regulation and occupational health legislation. Simplified internal label application in intermediate containers eliminates this risk at low cost.
Common Working Points with the Occupational Health and Safety Team
The Chemical Compliance team and the Occupational Health and Safety team use the same data for different purposes; Therefore, there are three points that need to be carried out jointly: the current SDS list, the comparison of exposure scenarios with field conditions and the workplace measurement plan. Measurements taken by Occupational Health and Safety can also be used as evidence in your chemical file.
