Safe storage of chemicals creates important obligations in terms of both occupational safety and environmental legislation.
Caution: separate storage of incompatible chemicals; correct labeling and SDS access; leakage and fire precautions; ventilation and temperature conditions; emergency plans. These conditions are defined in the relevant sections of the SDS.
ONAY Mühendislik provides consultancy on the compliance of storage and handling conditions with the legislation.
What does the legislation say about storage
Chemical storage is subject to rules derived from both the CLP classification and occupational safety legislation. Separation of incompatible substances, floor and ventilation conditions, spill collection capacity and fire precautions are the basic topics.
Incompatible matter separation
Oxidizers are stored separately from flammables, and acids are stored separately from bases. This distinction is read from the relevant section of the safety data sheet; Each product should be looked at separately, and grouping should not be done by assumption.
Label and access
Every container in the warehouse must be labeled, including small containers being transferred. Safety data sheets should be accessible from the field; If the folder is locked in the office, there is practically no access.
Questions asked in the audit
Warehouse list, incompatibility table, spill response materials and whether the personnel knows them are asked. It is one of the areas where the application is controlled as much as the document.
Separation and Collective Storage Rules
The basic principle in chemical storage is the physical separation of substances that may react dangerously with each other. Oxidizers should not be kept in the same compartment with flammable liquids, acids with bases, and substances that react with water should not be kept in the same compartment with aqueous solutions. The separation plan should be based on the SEA classification of the products and the incompatibility information in sections 7 and 10 of the safety data sheet, and should be included in the warehouse layout sketch.
Ventilation, Floor and Collection Capacity
Mechanical ventilation in areas where volatile organic solvent is stored is sized to keep vapor accumulation below the explosive atmosphere limit. The floor must be resistant to the material stored and impermeable; The catch basin capacity must cover the volume of the largest container or a certain proportion of the total volume. The absorbent material and neutralization kit to be used in case of a spill are kept accessible in the same area.
Label, Record and Audit Trail
Each package in the warehouse must have a readable label, and intermediate containers must have an inner label bearing at least the product name and hazard pictograms. Entry-exit records are critical for both tonnage tracking and monitoring the thresholds at which the KKDIK registration obligation arises. The most frequently requested documents during inspections are up-to-date safety data forms, warehouse layout plans and employee training records.
Documentation of Chemical Storage Plan
Documenting the Chemical Storage scheme is as important as its implementation in the field. Which hazard class should be shown in which compartment on the warehouse layout map, and incompatible substance pairs should be listed separately. When the justification for the Chemical Storage application is asked during the audit, this sketch and the seventh part of the safety data sheets are presented together.
