What is the difference between an SDS and a TDS?
A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) provides a product’s hazard and safe-use information in 16 standard sections and is a legal requirement for hazardous products. A Technical Data Sheet (TDS) provides technical characteristics, application and performance information. The SDS focuses on safety; the TDS on technical use.

SDS and TDS are not interchangeable
A safety data sheet describes hazards, safe handling, first aid, storage and disposal, and it is required by law for hazardous substances and mixtures. A technical data sheet describes performance: viscosity, density, solids content, drying time, coverage and application conditions. Customers often ask for one and mean the other.
Who is responsible for each
The safety data sheet must follow the sixteen-section structure and, for the Turkish market, be prepared in Turkish under certified supervision. The technical data sheet has no prescribed format and remains the manufacturer’s own document, though it still has to be accurate.
Where the two must agree
- Flash point and other physical values
- Product identity, code and revision date
- Storage conditions and shelf life
- Incompatible materials and handling limits
A practical rule
Generate both documents from a single data source. When a value changes in the formulation, both files should be revised together and given a new revision number. Conflicting figures between the two documents are a frequent finding during inspections.

When the formulation changes, both documents are revised together and given a new revision number and date. Keep the earlier versions archived, because a customer complaint is usually investigated against the version that customer received rather than the current one.
