Technical data sheet (TDS) collects the technical specifications, application conditions and performance values of a product in a single document. Unlike the safety data sheet, it does not describe the harmfulness, but rather how and where to use the product. Why is a technical data sheet (TDS) required?

The buyer company requests technical data in order to adapt the product to its own process. Viscosity, density, solids rate, drying time, consumption and storage conditions are among these data. Additionally, TDS is almost always requested in tenders and supplier approval processes. The document is therefore a business necessity rather than a legal obligation.

Difference between TDS and SDS (SDS)

The two documents are frequently confused. The SDS focuses on hazard classification, first aid, storage and disposal and is mandated by legislation. TDS, on the other hand, focuses on performance and its content is the responsibility of the manufacturer. What's in a good TDS?

• Product name, code, revision number and date
• Area of use and application method
• Typical physical and chemical values with measurement method
• Application conditions: temperature, humidity, surface preparation, number of coats
• Packaging options, shelf life and storage conditions
• Limitations and incompatible materials

Consistency: TDS and SDS should not conflict

The most common problem we see in practice is that the values in two documents are different. For example, the flash point is written differently in the TDS and differently in the safety data sheet. This contradiction causes both loss of trust in the customer and non-compliance in the audit. Therefore, we produce TDS and SDS from the same database.

Revision management

When the formulation changes, the technical data sheet must also be updated. The number, date and reason for each revision are recorded. This way, it can be tracked which customer received which version. Additionally, older versions are kept in the archive; This archive is decisive in complaint investigations.
